Naruto City is a major producer of pears, accounting for nearly 70% of the prefecture's total production.

Replacing the Chojuro variety, known as "Awa pear," the sweet and juicy "Kosui" and "Hosui" varieties have become the mainstream in recent years.

Pear harvesting takes place from August to September, and the varieties available vary depending on the time of year.

Naruto pears are mainly shipped to the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe area and are very popular.

In Naruto City , you can find produce at supermarkets and direct-from-the-farm stores, and it's also common to see farmers selling their produce at unmanned stalls.

As of September, JA Ozu Matsushige in Naruto City is in the peak season for shipments.

How to choose a delicious pear

Have you ever struggled to choose the right pear when buying them at a supermarket or other store? To solve this problem, we asked Fruit Garden Yamagata, a pear farm in Naruto , for their tips on how to spot a delicious pear.

① Those with a plump shape

I recommend pears that are generally round and have a plump, wide shape.

② Those with firm skin

The key is to choose ones that are firm on the surface and look fresh and juicy.

③ One with a sturdy core.

④ Something that feels "heavy" when you hold it in your hand.

If they are roughly the same size, pears that feel heavier when you hold them tend to contain more juice.

⑤ Check the "optimal color" for each variety.

The color of the skin of pears when ripe varies depending on the variety.

Fruit Garden Yamagata cultivates pears using fertilizers unique to Naruto , such as oyster powder from Uchino Sea in Naruto . The carefully cultivated brand pear, Uzushio Pear®, is rich in minerals and grows into a large, sweet pear.

You can experience harvesting Uzushio Pear® peaches. It's an all-you-can-eat experience for 60 minutes.
You can not only enjoy the harvested pears on the spot, but you can also take home two pears each as a souvenir.

Earlier, I wrote about "how to tell if a pear is delicious," but when you go pear picking, the easiest way to find out is to have the staff check the color of the pear to make sure it's ripe for that particular variety!
However, one of the joys of pear picking might be finding delicious-looking pears yourself.

Enjoying pear-flavored sweets! (Gelateria Spuntino)

Gelateria Spuntino uses seasonal vegetables and fruits sourced directly from local producers to make its gelato.
The pear sherbet made with pears from Naruto is available for a limited time during the summer.
This sherbet is subtly sweet and refreshing, capturing all the best qualities of pears.
The pear sherbet served on the day of the interview was made with Hosui pears from Ozu Town Naruto City . From around September, you can enjoy pear sherbet made with Ya Li pears, a variety originally from China. These Ya Li pears are also sourced directly from farmers in Naruto City.

Gelateria Spuntino is one of the few gelato shops in Japan that has a drive-thru. If you're driving to Naruto, you can enjoy gelato without even getting out of your car! It's a great service for families! I highly recommend you check it out.
